Most of us spend over 90% of our time indoors, where air quality is shaped by building design, air handling systems, occupant activities and behaviour as well as outdoor pollution, all of which influence health, wellbeing, and productivity. Clean air is vital to good health and well-being and to sustainable communities. The EC-AIR is a sustainability test-bed pilot project that aims to measure and benchmark indoor air quality across Education City buildings, identify ways to improve it, and implement any corrective actions if needed. The test-bed aims to ultimately inform the development of guidelines, national standards and mitigation strategies to improve indoor air quality and protect public health.
EC-AIR is a joint collaboration between Earthna and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), with funding from Qatar Research and Development Institute (QRDI) and support from City Operations and other partners in the Qatar Foundation (QF) ecosystem. QRDI supported the funding of this project through its Innovation Pilot Grant (IPG) program.
Expected outcomes
The insights from this test-bed are expected to inform evidence-based policymaking for urban green spaces. Such projects and urban green spaces in general are an integral part of the solution to combat desertification, loss of biodiversity, and adaption to climate change.
